Lace House – Governors Mansion

location for weddings in Columbia, SC

Nestled in the historic Arsenal Hill neighborhood in Columbia, the South Carolina Lace House is a uniquely beautiful and historic home located within the Governor’s Mansion Complex. While the Governor often uses the Lace House to host dinners and other State events, the Lace House and its adjacent gardens are also available to rent for weddings, parties, meetings, and other events.

Built in 1854, The Lace House was the home of Thomas and Mary Caldwell Robertson, the youngest daughter of John Caldwell, who resided next door in the Caldwell-Boylston home. John Caldwell was president of the South Carolina Railroad and gave the land for the Lace House to his daughter as a wedding gift. The house was designed by a French architect who designed homes in New Orleans and is of the French architectural style.

The Lace House boasts its original intricate ironwork, ornamental cornices, parquet floors, figured glass doors and brass chandeliers. This original architecture is part of what makes the Lace House such a sought after event venue.

The upstairs of the Lace House boasts a “Bride’s Room” which features the field bed of Arthur Middleton, one of South Carolina’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence. This bed was taken on his military campaigns during the Revolutionary War. There is also a “Groom’s Room” filled with prints of native South Carolina birds and waterfowl. The “Map Room” upstairs is decorated with historic maps of this state. The main level of the Lace House holds the piano of Mary Caldwell Robertson, daughter of John Caldwell—original owner of the Caldwell-Boylston house next door. The piano is used by brides as a gift table. The furnishings have been donated. Several pieces belong to former governors and two pieces belong to First Lady Jenny Sanford.

While the Lace House is the must rent on the property, and is a perfect site for a wedding reception, the Caldwell-Boylston Gardens are an available option for a possible on-site ceremony. Also, the Mansion Mall, which features the Gonzales Fountain, is another great option for either a ceremony or an extension of the reception.
